Dusk Session Volume 1

Hip Hop

A couple nights ago I recorded a two hour mix, and upon saving it out, the app crashed and I lost it all. It didn’t both me too much, but I couldn’t get over the fact that I wanted to record another one. So I did.

This one weighs in at just under 2 hours. I have to admit, there are two parts that suck, due to user error accidentally pressing the wrong button on the Spin. Still getting used to it, but I feel that I’m getting better with it.

So this is a new series that I’m naming Dusk Sessions. Enjoy

West Coast Vibes

G-funk Hip Hop

I finally got my Vestax Spin in the mail, and so far, I really like it. It’s a huge adjustment from what I was used to though. So it’s going to take some getting used to. It’s odd trusting the BPM counter in djay, rather than trusting my own ear. It has it’s pluses and minuses.

Anyways, here’s a short mix, lots of old school Snoop, Dr. Dre production, and pretty much a west coast vibe. I had another 2 hour mix, but djay crashed when I was saving it out, so I couldn’t post it. Oh well.

Press Record Podcast Available in iTunes

Apple finally gave the green light for approval of the Press Record podcast. So if you’re an iTunes user and want these mixes through that channel, feel free to subscribe. The first two mixes aren’t there yet because they’re still on SoundCloud, so I will work on getting those over to iTunes shortly. But from here on out, you can get them in iTunes, or just download them on your own.

Let me know if you have any issues with the podcast.

New Mix And Testing iTunes Podcasts

Hip Hop info Instrumental

I’ve decided that I’m moving off of SoundCloud. While I really love the service, the current plan that I’m on only allows for 12 hours of music, and I don’t really want to pay for the next plan up. I think I’ll go through 12 hours pretty quickly (or even 36 hours, the next plan up), especially if I bring in another dj. And I’d rather not limit the time frame per mix. Sometimes you’re just feeling the music and don’t want to stop mixing, and I want to be able to share that. So I’m switching to Rackspace Cloud Files, which is much more cost effective. So the audio player will also change.

I’m also trying out having these mixes available through iTunes as a podcast. I figure there are tons of people who already use iTunes, so I’m trying to make it easier to distribute these mixes to interested people. So I will link up the podcast once it’s live and working.

Anywho, this mix is the same format as the other Chill Mode mixes….. this is actually the first one I did, that I originally said that I wasn’t going to link up. But the more I listen to it, the more I figure it’s not that bad.

Chill Mode Mix Vol. 3

Chill Mode Hip Hop Instrumental

Here is Vol. 3, which I hope will be the last one that I have to do with a mouse and keyboard. While it’s still fun mixing, let me just say, that it sucks using a mouse/keyboard to mix. And it doesn’t help without the ability to pre-queue the songs. Oh well.

This is mostly hip-hop instrumentals again. Couple rough transitions at the beginning, but smooths out eventually. Enjoy.

Chill Mode Mix Vol. 2

Chill Mode Hip Hop Instrumental

These are a few hip hop instrumentals mixed together with Djay. Some of the transitions are rough because I couldn’t queue up the next track coming in. I had to adjust it all on the fly. I plan on getting the Vestax Spin any day so these mixes will be much better.

If you want to know the name of a track, just ask. I’m going to integrate playlists in the near future.

Update: I’ve had a few reports of the SoundCloud player not working. If you are having issues with it, let me know and I’ll provide a different link for download.

Welcome to Press Record

When I was in college, djing was one of my favorite hobbies. I spent a whole lot of money on either vinyl, or mixtapes to listen to from my favorite dj’s. After I graduated, I sold my equipment and started to put more focus on freelance design work and my career. But I’ve missed it ever since I stopped.

With things much more settled these days, I now want to get back into djing. I’m not really interested in doing gigs, but rather more of the bedroom dj role. So, when I was in college I often just recorded my practice sessions, without having any set playlist. I just played what I felt like hearing at the time.

That brings me to the theme of this site. Just pressing record, and start mixing. All of the mixes here will be just that. My goal, eventually, will be to have other dj’s join in and possibly expand the genres/tastes of music here. So if you would be interested, shoot me an email.

I plan on adding more features in the near future for easier sharing, searching, playlists, etc., but for now, I just want to keep it very simple. I’m starting off using SoundCloud for hosting the [downloadable] mixes, but I might end up switching to something more cost effective. For software and recording I’ll be using djay. As much as it would be nice to have the old hardware setup I had in college, it’s just a bit too expensive, so for hardware, I’ll be using the Vestax Spin.

So there you have it, and this is the new site. So I hope you enjoy the music and come back.
