Press Record: Behind the Scenes [Video]

Video info

I’ve been playing around with the iPhone 4 camera a bunch, mainly with recording a couple minutes of a mixing. So I thought I’d post one here, which is a couple minutes of the Down Time mix I did, at about 11 and a half minutes in. This is the setup in action. You may need to up the volume, because the recording volume was lower than I thought.

There is also this other one, which is a video of me mixing some Slum Village tracks:

Down Time and Favorites

info

It’s been quiet around these parts, but with good reason. Aside from being swamped at the day job and working on getting another personal project out the door, things have been extremely busy. On top of that, my wife and I will be moving into a house very soon, so everything is pretty much boxed up. So it might be another week or so before I’m back up and running and able to to provide another mix.

So far, I’m liking how this site is going. I’ve gotten some humbling comments about my mixes. While I know they aren’t perfect, it makes me feel pretty good when others mention they enjoy the mixes I’m putting together. That’s all I could ask for with a project like this.

I actually listen to my mixes quite a bit after posting them here, so since I don’t have any new mixes, here are a few of my favorites that I would highly recommend listening to:

I still have many ideas for more mixes, so we’ll be back at it in no time. Thanks for waiting it out with me, and being a listener. Also, if you have any ideas on types of mixes you’d like to hear let me know, and if I have it I’ll try to fill the request.

Press Record Podcast Available in iTunes

info

Apple finally gave the green light for approval of the Press Record podcast. So if you’re an iTunes user and want these mixes through that channel, feel free to subscribe. The first two mixes aren’t there yet because they’re still on SoundCloud, so I will work on getting those over to iTunes shortly. But from here on out, you can get them in iTunes, or just download them on your own.

Let me know if you have any issues with the podcast.

New Mix And Testing iTunes Podcasts

Hip Hop Instrumental info

I’ve decided that I’m moving off of SoundCloud. While I really love the service, the current plan that I’m on only allows for 12 hours of music, and I don’t really want to pay for the next plan up. I think I’ll go through 12 hours pretty quickly (or even 36 hours, the next plan up), especially if I bring in another dj. And I’d rather not limit the time frame per mix. Sometimes you’re just feeling the music and don’t want to stop mixing, and I want to be able to share that. So I’m switching to Rackspace Cloud Files, which is much more cost effective. So the audio player will also change.

I’m also trying out having these mixes available through iTunes as a podcast. I figure there are tons of people who already use iTunes, so I’m trying to make it easier to distribute these mixes to interested people. So I will link up the podcast once it’s live and working.

Anywho, this mix is the same format as the other Chill Mode mixes….. this is actually the first one I did, that I originally said that I wasn’t going to link up. But the more I listen to it, the more I figure it’s not that bad.

Welcome to Press Record

info

When I was in college, djing was one of my favorite hobbies. I spent a whole lot of money on either vinyl, or mixtapes to listen to from my favorite dj’s. After I graduated, I sold my equipment and started to put more focus on freelance design work and my career. But I’ve missed it ever since I stopped.

With things much more settled these days, I now want to get back into djing. I’m not really interested in doing gigs, but rather more of the bedroom dj role. So, when I was in college I often just recorded my practice sessions, without having any set playlist. I just played what I felt like hearing at the time.

That brings me to the theme of this site. Just pressing record, and start mixing. All of the mixes here will be just that. My goal, eventually, will be to have other dj’s join in and possibly expand the genres/tastes of music here. So if you would be interested, shoot me an email.

I plan on adding more features in the near future for easier sharing, searching, playlists, etc., but for now, I just want to keep it very simple. I’m starting off using SoundCloud for hosting the [downloadable] mixes, but I might end up switching to something more cost effective. For software and recording I’ll be using djay. As much as it would be nice to have the old hardware setup I had in college, it’s just a bit too expensive, so for hardware, I’ll be using the Vestax Spin.

So there you have it, and this is the new site. So I hope you enjoy the music and come back.
